Windsurfing: Hayling Island Wind Direction: SW-W Wind Stength: 20-25 knots? Surf / Sea State: Choppy/small waves on sandbar Air Temperature: 17ºC Sea Temperature: 18ºC Weather: Mostly sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Another sunny windy day zzzzz....got work to do but it would have been
extremely rude not to. Adam and Tom had gone to Bigbury and everyone else
was either working or away, so had to go it alone. There was swell in the
channel apparently, (as well as honking gale force winds in the morning...)
so it had to be somewhere wavey - W in the wind which ruled out Avon - Adam
suggested Boscombe would be firing but the wind was forecast to drop in the
west first so went to Hayling. (also it's closer and I know what to expect
- only sailed at Boscombe once and it was full-on).
Arrived around 2.15pm. Tide was higher than I expected and it looked pretty
manic but pretty damn good out there. Solid 4.5 wind and some meaty looking
swell pushing in. Actually turned out to be not as quite as windy as
expected. 4.7 or maybe 5.0 would have been ideal - if I had one of those in
my quiver. Still, nicely powered up most of the time, not too much
blobbing, and another solid session. The waves weren't really shaping up at
the start and it was usual Hayling mega-confused water state. Really hard
work and difficult sailing. As usual when a fraction underpowered, had
problems getting going when sailing back in on port. Really dunno why -
must be something wrong with my technique, but can't think what. Maybe I'm
trying to point too high when I can see the shore and my launch point. Felt
like I was sailing uphill when coming back in and had trouble getting over
the back of swells.
Gybing was hard work and not very successful in the confused water state.
But I enjoyed a very healthy helping of jumps, a couple with an extremely
decent side portion of float. The waves became much more jumpable towards
the end as the sandbar got exposed. Couldn't leave the session without
trying for another forward, so on my penultimate run out, a small wave
jacked up in front of me nicely, and I went for it - with about as much
success than my last two attempts. Come on - TUCK UP LEGS - SHEET IN! How
hard can it be damnit?!? Still, as before, it felt very good trying. Had a
few efforts at riding some of the waves, but with limited joy since they
were very messy and temperamental. Often after catching a wave nicely and
then bottom turning, the wave would suddenly disappear. So not as good a
wave-sailing session as I had hoped. Maybe Boscombe would have been better?
I'll never know.
Anyway, another solid session, 4.5, sunny, 3 hours on the water, can't
really ask for much more. Well, some proper clean waves would be nice I
suppose just maybe, and also a successful forward loop? Then it would have
been a 5 star session, not just a measly 4 again. Absolutely
cream-crackered now, and still in a continual state of utter disbelief
about how good this summer has been. That was session number 31 since
mid-June. Incredible.
(PS reading this again the day after the night before - think my
unsuccessful loop attempts may be partly due to not being used to jumping
out of the harness. So will just try some normal un-hooked jumps next
session, and practise tucking my legs up. Once I'm confident with them,
I'll go for the sheeting in bit. Simple.
Possibly more wind this weekend - hope so cos I'm really psyched up to go
for these loops now. Oh yeah bring 'em on).
